Fresh talks have taken place between meat export officials in Russia and China concerning trade between the two countries, including exports of Russian pigmeat.
According to a report issued by Rosselkhoznadzor, the Russian state veterinary service, a telephone conference was held earlier this week between the service’s head of inspection, Basil Yakobson, and the head of the International Cooperation Bureau of Food Safety of China (AQSIQ), Zhang Baofeng.
Key topics of conversation included plans for Chinese officials to inspect a number of Russian beef and pork plants at the end of August concerning future “access for animal products to the Chinese market”.
The report comes at a time when the importance of securing increased levels of pigmeat exports from the EU to China is being highlighted as a key feature of price recovery for European producers, giving the Russian/Chinese talks heightened status in terms of the market’s competitive pressures.
The telephone conference also included discussion on the issue of Chinese exports of animal products to Russia, with the Russian officials agreeing to provide “missing information” from previous trade exchanges between the two countries.
Rosselkhoznadzor also reported that the two sides involved in this week’s telephone conference “expressed satisfaction with the level of bilateral cooperation in the field of veterinary medicine” between the two countries.
