The acquisition of SPF-Danmark by Danish Crown has been approved by the European Commission (EC) under its EU merger regulation, with the conclusion that the move raises “no competition concerns”.
“SPF is active in the market for the trading and transportation of piglets and breeding animals in Denmark and abroad, as well as in the transportation of slaughter pigs,” said the EC today. “Danish Crown is specialised in the slaughtering, de-boning, processing and refining of meat as well as in the sale of fresh meat and meat products.
“The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would raise no competition concerns, because of its very limited impact on the market structure.”
The EC also said that the transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
SPF-Danmark claims to be the world’s largest transporter of pigs, moving 15 million pigs annually from farm to farm and from farm to abattoir.
