UK Brexit minister, David Jones, has told NPA that the Government recognises the important contribution which the pig sector makes to the UK economy.
Mr Jones, the Minister for Exiting the EU, made his comment in a written reply to a letter from NPA chairman, Richard Lister, who had outlined the key role played by the pig sector while also calling for the industry to be given “appropriate protection” under post-Brexit trade arrangements.
In addition to his recognition of the industry’s status, Mr Jones (pictured above) added that his department had begun work to develop Government priorities for the negotiations and that he was keen to get input from as many stakeholders as possible.
“I understand your concerns about protecting the UK pig industry so it can compete with its European and global counterparts,” he wrote. “I would like to reassure you that the Government will consider all factors carefully as we approach negotiations, as this is clearly a very important issue for UK business.”
