UK pigmeat exports hit a 17-year high in 2016, totalling almost 206,000 tonnes, according to AHDB Pork.
The trading increase, which was 10% up on 2015 levels, was achieved despite fluctuations in export volumes during the final quarter.
“At nearly 206,000 tonnes, the 2016 figure is the highest annual amount the UK has exported since 1999,” said AHDB Pork, adding that the annual increase was partly attributed to a 47% rise in shipments to China, an outlet which overtook Germany and Ireland in 2016 to become the UK’s largest market.
The value of UK pigmeat exports also climbed last year, rising by 28% on the year to reach nearly £252 million.
While Ireland remained the UK’s highest value market during the year, China’s share increased significantly, overtaking Germany to become the second largest market in value terms.
