The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has warned that it is “vital” than any rise in EU pig rises in the coming weeks is fed through to Irish producers.
Reporting that the “last of the factories” in Ireland have now passed recent price rises to producers, albeit two weeks after other plants had done so, the IFA has signalled that it doesn’t want to see any similar slowness in feeding improvements back to farmers in the future.
“Expectations are that the coming weeks will see farmers prices continuing to rise across the EU and it is vital Irish prices rise in line,” said IFA pigs committee chairman, Pat O’Flaherty, pointing out that although Germany took a stand-on position following a recent rally that increased producer prices generally, the other main EU pig producing countries all increased prices this week.Â
IFA also reported that, for the week ending Feb 22, Ireland’s pig price fell below the EU average, registering 99% of the EU figure. Â
