A high level meeting between the National Pig Association (NPA) and JSR Genetics to discuss the company’s recent importation of boars from the US has produced a positive outcome although without changing the association’s original stance on the issue.
“We are content that JSR covered all the bases in terms of the importation process, even gold-plating certain aspects of it,” NPA general manager, Dr Zoe Davies, told Pig World. “As such, we are happy that they did it properly.
“However, we’re still not happy that they did it in the first place.”
Dr Davies was commenting after a meeting at the end of last week in which she was involved along with NPA chairman Richard Longthorp, regions manager Lizzie Press and JSR chairman, Tim Rymer.Â
Even with JSR’s reported ‘no more US imports’ stance without NPA approval, Dr Davies said the whole issue was still sending “signals to others”.
“We welcome the statements which have been made since our meeting last week and the constructive nature of our discussion,” she said. “Frankly, however, we don’t want anyone importing from the US while the disease there is still not well understood and not controlled. That remains our position.”
