BPEX could dip into its cash reserves to help fight an outbreak of PEDv if it was to reach England’s shores, according to the organisation’s chairman Stewart Houston.
Speaking to Pig World at this week’s BPEX Innovation Conference, he said that funds would be made available if required.
“The reserves are there for just such an eventuality, and would be replenished by adjusting the producer and processor levy,” he said.
In common with the the other AHDB levy bodies, BPEX is currently sitting on cash reserves of about 35% of annual levy revenue – in this case a little more than £3 million.
