We could be feeding insects and algae to pigs by 2020, according to Mick Hazzledine of Premier Nutrition who’ll present some alternative feed ingredients – also including peas, beans and yeast – at next week’s BPEX Innovation Conference.
Mr Hazzledine will analyse the nutritional potential and practicalities of these raw materials and give a verdict on which options pig producers are most likely to be feeding in a few years’ time.
The potential of plant breeders to help with pig nutrition is also on the agenda. Chris Tapsell of KWS UK Ltd will discuss opportunities to move away from feed crops as commodities and breed crops to add value and benefit for feed producers.
“If suitable relationships can be developed between producers, feed companies and breeders, we can develop the breeding targets together and establish a supply chain where added value is shared appropriately,” he says.
The conference will showcase the future of pig feeding and data recording and is being held on Tuesday, June 24 at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from 09:45 to 17:00, with lunch and refreshments provided.
