JH Lambert Ltd’s multi-species abattoir based at Eye airfield, Suffolk, has received planning permission to double the size of its lairage facilities.
Mid Suffolk District Council approved the plans for a new building 6,600 square feet in size that will increase the abattoir’s holding capacity from 450 finished pigs to 900 head.
Lambert director Kevin Burrows told Pig World that the lairage facilities at Eye had become a bit of a bottleneck and the new building would allow them to get animals off lorries more quickly.
“We are Freedom Food accredited, and although there were no welfare issues with our existing lairage, turnaround times were not as quick as we would have liked,” he said. “Freedom Food is helping us with the design of the new facility and the intention is that it will allow us to get pigs of the lorry quicker and help the hauliers to keep their trucks moving.” Â
