Covid infections continued to affect staffing levels, as the situation in the pork supply chain showed no sign of improvement, according to Thames Valley Cambac.
“There was little change with market fundamentals this week – an oversupply of pigs, rapidly becoming out of spec, and a processing sector bereft of any ideas or suggestions to mitigate the crisis,” TVC said in its latest market update.
“Covid nfections continued to plague staffing levels, but it is hoped that these problems will wane, and staff
numbers soon recover.
“The latest SPP saw another highest weight recorded at 95.10 kgs, giving credence to the returns we see on a daily basis, with many batches now averaging well north of 100kgs.”
The fresh meat market was little changed, with twin pressures of cheap imports and ‘January’ downturn in demand. Sows stood on but numbers sold were still limited.
In Europe , Denmark suffered a 4 eurocent reverse, and the Euro ended the week little changed, up 0.08p at 83.51p.3p.
“There is little to no free market trade now, and even regular contracted supplies are badly disrupted by the backlog in the slaughter market. Weaner producers are being forced to be inventive to adapt to this new reality,” TVC added.
AHDB issued a 7kg weighted average weaner price of £32.86 but no 30kg store price.
