The price of sows in key EU member states have stabilised over the past two months after sharp declines in prices throughout August, September and October, AHDB analyst Freya Shuttleworth has reported.
The price declines reflect the continued oversupply of pig meat in Europe. In the week ending 23 January, the prices in the Netherlands were highest at โฌ0.80/kg, followed by Germany (โฌ0.79/kg), France (โฌ0.71/kg) and Denmark (โฌ0.56/kg).
Ms Shuttleworth said: โBoth the German and English pig herds have declined in 2021, with Germany seeing its smallest pig population for 25 years. The size of the English female breeding herd was down 6.9% (22,000 head) on the year before, according to the latest data released by Defra.โ
