Quality Equipment (QE) has now developed a solar powered model of its Transition Feeder, for the outdoor pig sector.
The new feeder will power up to 10 feeders, say QE, from its portable solar panel station; it is mounted on a frame and can be transported by forklift when it is folded.
Benefits of the outdoor feeder are similar to those of the regular Transition feeder, with the provision of freshly mixed gruel to help newly-weaned pigs overcome the transition period after being removed from a sow.
Two Transition feeders will cater for up to 120 piglets, and need only be topped up with feed and the provision of water at a minimum pressure of 1 bar.
Mark Harding, developer of the feeder, added that the Transition feeder has proven useful in situations for bed and breakfast producers who finish pigs in straw yards, and find that pigs vary in weight after delivery.
“Now there is a viable option for farmers who wean their pigs into tents,” concludes Mr Harding.
