Pig farmers in China’s Guangdong Province were “gobsmacked” when confronted with the growth rates being achieved by producers in the UK and USA by Farmex boss, Hugh Crabtree, recently returned from a fact-finding visit to area.
“I showed them live pictures of pigs in Yorkshire using the recently-developed growth sensor and live site maps of pig units in both the UK and USA,” said Mr Crabtree, whose laptop link-up took place on a 300-pig finishing unit “in the middle of nowhere, with barely any electricity supply”,
“They were amazed and could hardly believe the growth rates and speed of attaining market weights.”
The trip was part of a UK Government-sponsored programme, involving Lancaster University, which has a long association with China to enable Sino-British companies to collaborate on R&D.
