Leading NPA officials have urged new Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner to make national biosecurity and border controls a priority.
NPA chief executive Lizzie Wilson and senior policy adviser Tom Haynes had an initial meeting last week with Mr Zeichner, who asked them what the pig sector’s priorities.
“We outlined our concerns around the lack of border controls for both illegally imported meat and now legally imported commercial meat since the Border TOM system was introduced. He agreed it was also his priority, as well as maintaining the momentum to deliver contractual practice legislation,” Mrs Wilson said.
The NPA will schedule a longer and more detailed update meeting with Mr Zeichner in due course.
The association has also written to every MP who has producer members in their constituency to either congratulate them on their election or welcome them back to parliament, and to encourage them to make contact over any questions regarding the pigs sector.
