AHDB is consulting with the pig industry on a review of the All Pig Price (APP) data series and potential alternative data sources.
AHDB has been unable to report an APP since mid-January because, it said, ‘upcoming changes in the market structure mean the data provided did not meet validation and publication thresholds’.
The APP shows the average price paid to producers in GB for clean pigs (Monday to Sunday), with a time lag of more than a week, and incorporates both standard and non-standard pigs, so includes RSPCA Assured outdoor-bred and -reared pigs.
Data for the APP was supplied by six marketing groups, two of which, TVC and Scotlean, recently announced a merger, along with Scottish Pig Producers, to form the United Pig Cooperative. The other data providers for the APP were Anglia Quality Meats, Ian Mosey (Livestock), Meadow Quality and Yorkshire Farmers.
“We are continuing to collect data from the pig marketing groups and will make an assessment each week on whether a price can be reported. We are consulting with the industry to review the current APP data series and potential alternative data sources,” an AHDB spokesman.Â
The APP is based on a different data set to the Standard Pig Price (SPP), which is calculated with weekly data provided by abattoirs, and is unaffected by the changes.
