Pig producers and allied industry supporters have staged a hugely constructive #BiteIntoBritish promotion at an Aldi store in Hessle, East Yorkshire.
Aldi was identified as the location for the latest promotion due partly to its excellent record in backing Britain’s pig farmers, at least when it comes to stocking British pork products. This message was portrayed to Aldi shoppers and the media in attendance, with a call to one or two of the other supermarkets to up their games at a time when desperate British pig producers need all the help they can get.
Aldi shoppers were treated to delicious hog roast rolls provided by Anna’s Happy Trotters and many took the pledge to #BiteIntoBritish, as did the store’s management and staff, who were keen to get involved and highlight their credentials in backing Britain’s pig farmers.
Pig World’s Sam Walton, who attended the event, said: ” Aldi were brilliant, proudly displaying 100 per cent BRITISH in their windows, customers receiving a hog roast bap, and a free shopping bag.
“It was amazing how many customers had already bought British, not only ham, pork and bacon, but fruit and veg also. It was good to see how many producers turned out and the supply industry also. What an industry we have.”
Speaking before the event, one of the organisers, NPA vice-chair Hugh Crabtree said: “We will continue to get our message across to the media, talk to shoppers and of course, provide producer participants with an opportunity to do something positive and chat to others to share some of the burden they’re all under. That is a really important part of all this.
“We will be pointing out that Aldi has a 100% British policy for pork, unlike some of their competitors in the retail environment, one or two of which need to step up to the plate urgently and take a lesson from the likes of Aldi.”
