The non-compulsory reporting of PEDv cases in Europe is to be examined by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with a report on the issue expected within four months, according to the National Pig Association (NPA).
The aim is to get a better understanding of what strains are circulating within the EU, assess their virulence and discover how widespread the problem is across member states.
The NPA has been pressing for the EU to be better prepared in relation to PEDv, especially since the US strain has “made the leap to Ukraine”.
The Association is already taking note of “reliable reports” from producer-based sources that mortality as high as 70% has been suffered from the so-called “milder” European strains of PEDv.
