New video clips covering all aspects of building ventilation have been added to the AHDB Practical Pig app and website.
Presented by livestock ventilation specialist Tim Miller (pictured above) the videos cover a range of topics, including building and fan maintenance and cleaning, alarms, temperature lift and temperature sensors, and motors and switches.
AHDB Pork’s environment and building research coordinator, Susan Rabbich, said the videos show the importance of regular maintenance to ensure ventilation efficiency.
“Ventilation systems are intended to help provide optimum living conditions for pigs,” she said. “A well-managed and efficient working system will draw fresh air into a building and remove stale air, which will contain a proportion of microbes, dust, harmful gases and water vapour.
“This process helps to improve the overall housed environment for pigs and a system that is effectively circulating air can have a really positive impact on health and performance which, ultimately, helps improve the bottom line.
“For these reasons, I’d urge all producers to make the maintenance of ventilation systems a priority on farm and the new ventilation videos should really help with informing this process.”
The Practical Pig app now features nearly 100 short video clips that demonstrate management techniques on farm, covering breeding and wean-to-finish systems, both indoor and outdoor.
Managers and staff can use the app in situ out on the unit, on a smartphone or tablet computer, or on a PC in the office.
To view the videos on a PC or laptop, producers should visit practicalpig.ahdb.org.uk and to download the app, free, for smartphone or tablet computer, go to play.google.com or www.apple.com and search for AHDB Practical Pig App.
