The Pig Health Scheme helps producers and vets to make more informed decisions about disease control, and it is now back in full operation at 11 of the largest pig abattoirs in England.
Within the scheme, specially trained vets assess carcases and their plucks for 12 different health conditions, to provide post-mortem data on pigs and, therefore, beneficial assessments of the current health status of a herd for producers and vets.
The assessment dates for each abattoir are published on the AHDB website, alongside any further relevant information or scheme updates; and AHDB say that the scheme is likely to already be operating at an abattoir that you use.
Post-assessment, the report will be available to you and your vet after 48 working hours – via the Pig Hub portal. An additional report is also produced at the end of every quarter, which will show you trends and progressions in your pigs during the three-month period.
