Cranswick plc has notified BPEX that it will no longer be participating in the voluntary Deadweight Average Pig Price (DAPP) sample at either of its pig abattoirs at Preston and Watton.
Acknowledging the decision, BPEX thanked Cranswick for its participation in the DAPP since it was established in May 2003.
The remaining companies that voluntarily contribute to the DAPP price reporting survey are: HG Blake; Cheale Meats Ltd; FA Gill; Tulip Ltd; Karro; Dunbia; Woodhead Bros; and Lamberts.
There are fears that other processors may now follow suit, although Pig World understands that BPEX has an alternative plan of action ready should the current price-collection process become unrepresentative.
The future of the DAPP as a measure of deadweight pig prices is assured as the UK is legally obliged to report pig prices to the EU.
