Karro Food Group looks set to ending slaughter and butchery operations at its Wiveliscombe site in Somerset.
The firm, which bought Vion’s UK pork business in january this year in a management buyout, has started a 45-day consultation process that could see 113 of 131 jobs at the site becoming redundant. The remaining staff would focus on Karro’s curing and foodservice activities at Wiveliscombe.
The proposal to scale back Wiveliscombe is part of a wider strategic at Karro that’s aiming to improve scale and efficiency across all the firm’s operations.
Wiveliscombe is the smallest of Karro’s processing sites, handling about 5,000 pigs/week on average compared to 18,500 at Malton site and about 21,500 at Cookstown.
