There was some encouragement on the price front last week, but various factory problems, electrical and mechanical, caused many pigs to be rolled, according to Thames Valley Cambac.
However, in its latest weekly market update, TVC noted that processors hastily arranged alternative arrangements in response to factory problems, ‘giving us confidence that there is good underlying demand’.
“Pricing was again front and centre of discussions. One major breached 180p with their Q price, which was very welcome, and hopefully gives direction to others that their contract prices are lagging,” TVC added.
“Contract prices were also helped by another record SPP – up 4.78p to 171.61p. Supplies remained plentiful, but average weights continue to fall. Production costs continue to rocket however, with the latest wheat quotes north of £340. The fresh meat market was buoyant, encouraged by increased demand for barbecue products, and prices appreciated accordingly.”
Supply of cull sows was tighter than of late, but prices stood on. European prices were generally stable with the notable exception of the Netherlands, which lost nearly 8 eurocents. Price quotes in sterling were further compromised by a weaker Euro that ended the week down 0.81p at 85.11p.
In the weaner marketing, there was little trades outside contract arrangements for either 7kgs weaners or 30kgs stores. “Any deals that came to fruition, were concluded at higher prices, but price resistance was strong from fatteners, battered by higher feed costs,” TVC said.
