Copa-Cogeca, the European farmers and farm cooperative body has issued a stinging tweet, voicing its disgust at the way supermarkets have behaved in the wake of the Russian ban on EU food imports.
The tweet reads: “Copa-Cogeca warns of supermarkets abusing position in Russian crisis and using fear factor giving bad price to producer.”
The comment was released during a Copa-Cogeca meeting in Brussels with MEPs and member state governments, in which the core focus was on the dairy sector, although the tweeted message was worded to apply to all product areas, not just milk.
In addition, a statement issued after the dairy session, revealed the way Copa-Cogeca is approaching the market and price pressures currently being faced by its members, calling for farmers to have the “right tools in place to cope with extreme market volatility”.
The organisation also called for “more openness and transparency in the supply chain”, a sentiment which was clearly sharpened during its transfer to the Copa-Cogeca twitter feed.
