Market support for pigmeat, African swine fever (ASF), antimicrobial resistance and a new European animal welfare strategy are all on the agenda for discussion during today’s Council of EU Farm Ministers’ meeting in Brussels.
In addition to discussing the French-led pressure for action to resolve the pigmeat sector crisis (as reported by Pig World last week), ministers are set to consider the following:
- Debate on animal welfare on the basis of a position paper prepared by the German, Swedish, Danish and Netherlands delegations which calls for an EU platform on animal welfare to be established for stakeholders and competent authorities.
- Briefing on last week’s Dutch conference antimicrobial resistance.
- Update report on ASF from a Polish delegation.
Officials from Poland and Spain are also scheduled to join the French in outlining the current difficulties affecting both the pigmeat and milk sectors.
