The official release of the World Health Organization/International Agrency for Research on Cancer (WHO/IARC) evaluation of the carcinogenicity of red meat and processed meat will take place at 11am British time today, timed to coincide with the publication of a news report in The Lancet Oncology.
While UK media outlets have been speculating on the content of the release since Friday last week, a process which WHO has described as “random reports”, the organisation said it had not leaked any details to the press.
Industry bodies, including AHDB, have also been preparing for the release of today’s report.
IARC is the specialized cancer agency of the WHO. It’s stated objective is to promote international collaboration in cancer research, adding that it is “inter-disciplinary, bringing together skills in epidemiology, laboratory sciences and biostatistics to identify the causes of cancer so that preventive measures may be adopted and the burden of disease and associated suffering reduced”. IARC also declares a commitment to “producing evidence-based science for global cancer control policies”.
