Four new outbreaks of swine dysentery have been confirmed in the north of England on a single day.
Notifications via the Significant Diseases Charter revealed two outbreaks were confirmed in Thirsk, as well as one in East Yorkshire and one in North Humberside October 10.
Clinical signs for the two Thirsk outbreaks were first spotted on September 9 and September 22. The first clinical signs on the North Humberside unit were noticed on September 20 and for the East Yorkshire unit, on September 23.
All four units plan to depopulate. In each case, strict biosecurity and biocontainment measures are in place and the exact origin of the outbreak is under investigation.
Producers who have recently moved pigs from the affected areas are urged to monitor them closely for the development of any clinical signs of enteric disease and to notify your vet immediately if you observe any suspect diarrhoea.
The importance of observing a heightened level of biosecurity and monitoring for clinical signs over the next few weeks, especially within the affected areas, has also been stressed.
