Defra pig meat production figures for July see both a year-on-year and month-on-month fall in volumes.
In July of 2022, pig meat production volumes were recorded as 80,600 tonnes, for a 7% (5,800t) drop since June. Year-on-year, July 2022 has fallen 4% (3,700t) since July of last year and is the first month of 2022 to drop behind the previous year’s production volume.
The number of clean pigs slaughtered in July also fell 6% (57,700 head) behind July 2021, which recorded a volume of 883,400 head. July 2022 was also 6% (57,800 head) lower than June 2022’s throughput.
Carcase weights followed a similar trend, with the average weight of clean pig carcases in July recorded as 88.0kg (0.5kg less than June), but 1.7kg heavier than a year ago.
Regardless of July’s overall decrease in production volumes, 2022 to-date is up 4% (22,600t) on 2021 numbers, for a year total of 618,700t. The clean pig kill number is also at least level with last year, currently at 6.55 million head, for the same January to July period.
