With many producers taking finished pigs to the upper extremes of their contract weight, accurate weighing of pigs is essential to minimise the risk of pigs being out of the weight-range tolerance.
ACMC veterinary adviser Paul Thompson has warned that heavy penalties can result from overweight finishers.
Ensuring scales are properly maintained and sited free from obstructions is important to getting accurate weights, he said, adding that all scales should be regularly calibrated, ideally with a known standard weight.
