The European Commission (EC) has approved PORCILIS PCV M Hyo, a single-injection combination vaccine from MSD Animal Health which the company says will “protect piglets against Porcine Circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infections during the fattening period”.
“PCV2 and M. hyopneumoniae are two of the most important contributors to respiratory diseases in pigs and are a considerable burden to pig producers,” said MSD’s global swine business specialist, Narciso Bento, adding that the EC-approved vaccine would provide the immunity piglets need during a crucial time in their development.
MSD also said that the product reduces the number of vaccinations given to young piglets by providing protection against M. hyopneumoniae for 21 weeks and PCV2 for 22 weeks, all from a single injection with no restrictions to maternally derived antibody levels.
The company’s global R&D swine specialist, Ruud Segers, added that the single-injection combination was a “technical breakthrough,” which delivered a favourable safety profile while also retaining efficacy against both pathogens.Â
