The NPA will be providing guidance for members regarding the industry response to Defra’s important consultation on improving fairness in the pork supply chain.
Defra launched its long-awaited review of the pork supply last week, with Farming Minister Victoria Prentis has confirming it could ultimately lead to new legislation governing relations between producers and pork buyers, including legally binding contracts.
Running until October 7, the UK-wide consultation invites views from pig farmers, abattoirs, processors, retailers, marketing groups and all stakeholders involved in the pig supply chain. There are 44 questions, seeking views on issues such as transparency, price reporting, clarity of contractual terms and conditions, and market consolidation.
The NPA is looking to collate relevant information for its own response, while also encouraging members to respond individually.
“As one of the most significant consultations we’ve seen in a long time, NPA has started to formulate a plan on how best to gather your views and respond,” senior policy adviser Rebecca Veale said.
“We’re also putting together some guidance to help those that are keen to respond individually. The team will be in touch soon but until then take a look at the consultation.”
