AHDB’s latest Porkwatch survey suggests retailers continue to show steady support for British pigmeat products, albeit with plenty of variation among them.
Across the 10 retailers surveyed, the proportion of British pork on display in March remained in line with January and March 2024 at 88%. Aldi, Co-op, Lidl, M&S, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s were all 100% British, with Waitrose on 99% (100% own-brand), Tesco up to 82%, Asda on 60% and Iceland on just 1%.
The overall proportion of bacon on display, at 56%, was the same as January but up from 52% in March 24, with Co-op and M&S on 100% and Waitrose on 93%. Tesco was down to 34% but Sainsbury’s (81%) and Morrisons (56%) were both up on March and a year ago, as were Aldi (21%), Asda (28%), Lidl (20%) and Iceland (18%), albeit from very low bases.
The overall proportion of ham on display, at 61%, was slightly up on January but down on a year ago. Leading the way in terms of sourcing British were M&S (98%) and Co-op (97%), followed by Waitrose (88%), Sainsbury’s (81%) and Aldi (78%).
Sausage facings, at 77%, were in line with January, but slightly down on a yar ago. Leading the way was M&S (99%), Aldi (98%), Waitrose (96%) and Lidl (90%). All the rest were between 68% and 76%, excepet Iceland on 41%.
