Factory reliability was ‘shockingly bad’ last week, frustrating attempts by the supply side of industry to get
on top of the backlog, according to Thames Valley Cambac (TVC).
“Patience is wearing thin amongst producers and hauliers alike, as factories limp from one crisis to the next,” TVC said its latest market update.
“Prices eased back and the SPP fell to a 3-year low, down 1.28p at 137.49p. Producer worries increased as costs soared on the back of record highs in wheat, fuelled by the crisis in Ukraine.
“Fresh meat sales were very poor, with minimal demand reported from many outlets. The only ‘bright’ spot of the day was another improvement in the cull sow price. The green shoots of recovery are now showing strongly in Europe – Germany +7 eurocents, Holland +10, Belgium +9 and Spain +5. The Euro strengthened and ended the week up 0.32p at 83.74p.
“The weaner market remains badly compromised by the slaughter backlog. Unit turnarounds are delayed and the ensuing backup on breeding farms are causing some major headaches.”
AHDB announced a 7kg weaner weighted average price of £33.95.
