Slovakia has confirmed its first case of African swine fever (ASF).
The case in Strazne, in the Kosice region, near the border with Hungary, was confirmed on Wednesday at the country’s national reference laboratory. The OIE, the World Organisation for Animal Health, was notified on Thursday.
The OIE report says one animal was confirmed with the virus, with four other susceptible animals on the holding.
The local veterinary and food administration has ordered that the animals in question should be slaughtered and that a three-kilometre protective zone and 10-kilometre supervision zone should be set up around the outbreak.
The origin of the outbreak is unknown. ASF was confirmed in neighbouring Hungary for the first time in wild boar in April 2018.
