More than 2,000 new cases of ASF have been confirmed in Vietnam, according to the latest report from the OIE, which is affecting over 1.3 million domestic pigs.
After a decline in 2018, Vietnamese pig meat production had been expected to recover this year, although this now appears unlikely.
AHDB lead analyst Duncan Wyatt said: “The UK does not have market access to Vietnam at the moment, but rising import demand means AHDB has identified it as a market with some modest potential for low value cuts and pig offal in the future.
“The EU-Vietnam FTA is expected to come into force this year giving European pork increased market access and reduced tariffs barriers. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, this would make life more difficult for UK exporters even if access were obtained.”
