Eight firms, including four newcomers, have committed to this year’s pig industry scholarship scheme, run by AHDB Pork and Harper Adams.
The scheme, which is now in its third year, is aimed at first-year students returning to Harper Adams. It’s seen as a “vital part” of AHDB Pork’s plan for training across the industry to ensure there is a skilled and professional workforce.
“This year we have four new companies that have agreed to take part,” said AHDB Pork’s skills and training co-ordinator, Sam Bowsher.
“Overall, that is slightly fewer than last year but it is good for the industry as there is a constant flow of new firms who are providing opportunities for students. Existing companies are encouraged to dip in and out according to the needs of the business”
The scholarships include a year-long placement with the sponsoring firm, which may even result in a post for the student after they qualify.
The firms taking this year part include: Provimi; ForFarmers; Rattlerow Farms Ltd; Garth Pig Practice Ltd; CEVA; Devenish Nutrition and Quality Equipment.
The next stage of this year’s process takes place in October when the eight companies will attend the scholarship fair at Harper Adams, to find the students they need.
