AHDB Pork has decided to close its Real Welfare bureau service from November 1 this year, after which all future assessments will require to be moved over to the app or online portal facility.
The decision reflects the fact that two thirds of Real Welfare assessments being done by vets are already being submitted through the online portal or the app, with the numbers being sent to the bureau consequently continuing to fall.
“For vets and producers to get the most out of a Real Welfare visit, it is important for both to review the results,” said AHBB Pork’s health and welfare projects manager, Katja Stoddart.
“If the app is being used, this becomes easier as if offers immediate feedback and a visual representation for discussion. It is extremely important for both producers and vets and can highlight where improvements can be made.”
While uptake of the app has been steady, however, AHDB Pork said there is still “some way to go” in converting everyone to the online approach.
“Staff will be on hand for some time after the bureau closes to act as a helpline for those using the portal or the app but this will be for a limited time,” said Ms Stoddart.
The app is available free for both Android and I-phone.
