Back with a brand-new episode of the Pigs Today podcast, host Lydia Turner is joined by guests to discuss the impact of labour shortages, why young people aren’t entering the pig industry and what can be done to help more young people start work in the pig sector, plus much much more.
Firstly, joining Lydia is previous podcast guest, Anna Longthorp, pig farmer and owner of Anna’s Happy Trotters. Anna’s Happy Trotters is a family pig farm which is Red Tractor Assured and Freedom Foods accredited, while Compassion in World Farming has also recognised their commitment to animal welfare with a GOOD PIG AWARD.
The Longthorp family has been farming for four generations and Anna herself now works of the farm in the sales area of the business.
The second guest is Thomas Armstrong, an NPA allied industry member and previously a pig farmer of eight years. Thomas now works for MS Schippers as account manager and is still very much involved in the workings of the pig sector.
Following the ‘perfect storm’ that has been hitting the pig industry including Covid-19 and Brexit, Thomas and Anna delve deep into the reasons why people aren’t joining the pig sector as well as all the incredible reasons to join!
