Over the past 12 months, leading pork processor Pilgrim’s UK, has helped to provide 650,000 meal equivalents to families across the UK, writes Meghan Taylor.
To support those who are vulnerable, Pilgrim’s UK diverted produce from across its 15 sites. As well as partnering with community groups such as The Company Shop, the UK’s leading redistributor of surplus food and household products, and FareShare, the UK’s national network of charitable food redistributors, to provide the meals to those in need.
The initiative forms part of Pilgrim’s UK’s efforts to support local communities, with products being made available to purchase at heavily discounted prices; for emergency services and food industry workers, and those in vulnerable situations.
Matt Dight, head of sustainability at Pilgrim’s UK, also commented on how the initiative will prevent the waste of good produce.
“Working with groups like FareShare and The Company Shop means that we can redistribute quality food to those who need it most and supports our aim of being industry leaders in avoiding food waste.”
“We’re proud of the number of meals we’ve been able to provide over the past twelve months and will continue to do more to support our local communities,” he concluded.
